How do I figure out the numbers on a gift card that were damaged

If your son has scratched off the code on the back of an Xbox gift card, you can contact Xbox Support for assistance. They may be able to help you retrieve the code or if the card can be replaced. When you contact Xbox Support, be sure to have a photo of the front side and backside of the gift card as well as a photo of the official receipt. Go to support.xbox.com/contact-us and select the appropriate category (e.g. Billing) and then follow the prompts to contact support.

With regards to damaged gift card, if you still have the receipt I suggest to contact the Xbox support team directly instead. But make sure you have the receipt ready as they might ask for it. You may reach them here https://support.xbox.com/en-US/contact-us

Just click Contact us > Subscriptions & billing > I can't redeem a code > type in Support > Click Next > Choose "See contact options" and from there you can choose to chat with them or request a callback.
