As an alternative, you can purchase the game from a third-party retailer that accepts iDeal. Once purchased, you’ll receive a 25-digit code, which you can redeem on your Microsoft account to download and play the game.

For your issue about your PayPal purchase, when you sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders, does the redeemed code appear in your billing history? If it does, try signing out of your account, restarting your device, and then signing back in then check again.

I bought the Windows 10 version of Minecraft by mistake, but the one I wanted was the java edition.

I saw that anyone who buys minecraft java edition is entitled to minecraft Windows 10. Is the reverse also true? Who buys minecraft windows 10 is entitled to minecraft java edition?

If so, how do I access the java edition version at no additional cost?

By blank avatar, I assume you mean without a face. I have seen one like that and it's easy to do. Go into the Avater Editor and make your avatar bald. In the Avatar Editor is an option to create a gamerpic with your avatar. I believe you know that part already
because your current gamerpic has your avatar. In the gamerpic creator, simply turn your bald avatar around so that you are taking a pic of the back of his head. There you go, an avatar with no face.

Or if you're talking about the blank/white avatar over the grey background, it's there because they haven't added a gamerpic yet.
