How do I (beginner) set up Xbox live chat correctly?

Hello, I have added some friends for my young sons to play Minecraft with. They both use an account that does have Xbox Live Gold (for 360). However, I'm very confused about how the chatting aspect works. Sometimes it works for us, and sometimes doesn't,
so I'm trying to figure out what the right settings for this are. For example, when he starts his own world (making sure to check Online), can people join in and chat with him right away over the headset while playing the game, or does he need to start an
Xbox Live party first? And if so, is the channel supposed to be set to Party Chat or Game Chat ? And does he need to exit the Xbox Live Party before going into someone else's world? (the assumption being that if he is currently in his own xbox live party chat,
this will prevent him from talking to the members in one of his friends' world?) The last time he played, he went into a friend's world, and could neither hear his friends nor could they hear him. After pressing the "back" button (the left of the Xbox Guide
button) it showed the GT's of everyone there, and they all had the sound icon next to their names (this means they have headsets I believe). The headset is correctly set (on green, turned up almost all the way towards the orange side), and has worked fine
on several occasions. Thanks

Game chat means that only people in the game can chat, unless they are in their own Party. They will still show up as having mics with the sound icon even if they are in their own Party.

Game chat can be unreliable. Best thing to do is to make sure that everyone in the game is in the same Party.

If you bring up a person's gamertag and they have a 'Join Party' option then they are in their own party. You won't hear them in the game and must join the Party or invite them to your one.

Basically, get everyone into the same Party and forget about game chat.

Keep an eye on the mute button and volume.

Check your profile's in-game settings and allow chat with other crew members. You don't have this issue when in a party as that is taken care from xbox live service while the in-game chat requires in-game settings set up correctly.

SO I hope people do have the chat turned up and not the game turned up to max cause....I'm just saying its right there on the adapter.

I think most are setting up things correctly, but just not reading how to use the adapter. The left side is game and chat volume levels. the right is master volume of both.

I am 7 and looking for someone to play Mind craft online with. Also, I am not sure that I am connecting correctly. How do I know if I am set up properly to play online? Do I need to have Xbox live Gold? Someone please help......
