How do I accept a friend request on switch and do I need Nintendo online to do so

"Press the HOME Button to open the Home Menu.

From the Home Menu, select Friend List on the left.

You will see a message that says, You've received a friend request!

Tap on this message to display a list of the friend requests you have received.

Tap on the friend request you wish to accept or reject.

Tap Reject or Accept, or scroll down and select Block if you wish to block the user.

Tap Yes to confirm your choice, and then tap OK."

No need for a subscription.

Since Nintendo launched the paid Nintendo Online Service on September 18 you do actually need to pay to play on the switch now

I tried to follow the instructions for the Nintendo Switch, but sadly it doesn't work even if I try doing it again 30 times I still get the same problem. Now I cannot play with my friends online, which I am not happy about overall.

Make sure that have both parties have added and accepted each other as friends
