Sorry, but the gamertag policy is per the Code of Conduct that you agreed to. If you want to change it, you will have to pay. Too many people abused the system when it was free, so they had to stop it.

I can see how people could abuse that system, but Xbox could easily stop that by simply only allowing one free gamertag change. The current policy is overly aggressive policing of the offensive players, which ends up hurting the good account holders

Personally I am happy that it's not free to change your gamertag.

Think about it.. someone could abuse the ToS and then change his/her gamertag afterwards.

I much rather pay $15.

Your gamertag can be changed once for free. If you want to change it more than once, you'll be charged a fee in order to change the gamertag — $9.99 (in US dollars) for one change.

Note, though, that if your gamertag contains language that could be viewed as abusive, harmful, or otherwise inappropriate, Microsoft may change your gamertag without any prior notice.

I can understand how it could be, imagine this scenario though. You do all of the above and the claimed abuse continues, are you going to expect a free gamertag change over and over every time you claim someone sent you a nasty message etc

Pretty soon there would be a situation where everyone will think hmm I need a new gamertag for free, I'll just say I'm being abused on Live. Is that fair on those who actually pay to change their gamertags ? I don't believe it would be.

Now I'm not saying this is the case for you but there are people who turn up, claim they have problems with abuse etc purely to try and get a free gamertag change because they just don't want to pay the fee.
