My $250+ Turtle Beach headset finally died like all the way the other day. I have one other headset that I was able to plug directly into my Xbox gamepad but for some stupid reason, it only works while in a party, which makes zero sense. So I had the idea
today to use my phone as a "headset" or at least a microphone, with the phone plugged into my Xbox gamepad via 3.5mm audio cable and some sort of app on my phone to redirect audio through there.

But after looking online, all I can find are articles and videos talking about using the Xbox app for PARTY chat (which isn't what I need -- I just wanna be able to communicate with my team in Overwatch without having to invite total strangers to a party.)
or videos showing how to make my phone into a wireless Windows PC mic with a bunch of PC-specific software and/or settings. It's been a very frustrating couple of hours.

So, I'm finally breaking it down and asking around if anybody already has a solution to this dilemma.

    :)

How can I use my smartphone as a microphone headset for NON-PARTY ONLINE GAME CHAT through Xbox gamepad?

    Hello Aquarian Rising,

Thank you for your post. You are able to use your phone or a Windows 10 PC to join party chat but there is no way to use an external device besides a headset plugged into your controller to speak in Game Chats.

I hope this answers your question.

How can I use my smartphone as a microphone headset for NON-PARTY ONLINE GAME CHAT through Xbox gamepad?

    Hello ,

I understand this is the official position because Xbox representatives aren't supposed to recommend third party software, on an Android phone or elsewhere, in case the software in question proves to be malicious. However, to suggest that there's "no way"
to use one's Android phone as a stand-in for an actual headset is just patently false. I can appreciate the position you're in, but the technologies involved are just too dynamic for there to not be a solution, especially given the particulars of the task
    at hand.

That is to say, there's no way for the Xbox One to detect that the audio device attached to the gamepad is anything other than an audio device, I simply don't know of any specific Android app that achieves the intended function.

Now, that being said, I just need to wait for a more knowledgeable user to come along and make a suggestion. MS employees obviously can't make such recommendations, and again there's nothing shocking or upsetting about that, but unless I'm in entirely the
wrong part of the support site, I should be able to get some input from some other users fairly quickly, I hope. (Worst case scenario, there's some obscure regulation about even users asking about third-party apps, and even then all I have to do is find some
third party website without such restriction.)

So, yeah, no harm no foul, but if any other users can make a recommendation on something to try, I'd appreciate the nudge in the right direction. I can't exactly get out to buy a new headset with these stupid lockdowns, so I'm kinda stuck having to use what
    I've got.

Astro A50's not working in party chat or game chat on Backwards Compatible games

Does the headset work on Xbox One Party chat (i.e. do you see a circle around your gamerpic in the party chat on Xbox One)?

Are only Backwards compatible games affected? If so, it might be that the Astro A50 base station acts as a USB microphone, which doesn't work as Chat microphone on the Xbox 360.

You might have to contact the Astro A50 support for information on how to use that headset on backwards compatible titles.

Yeah it works on the Xbox One party chat but yeah that's what i was thinking i might just have to get a old Xbox One chat headset for it to work.

Why only party chat can go through TV speakers?

    Not game audio, game chat.

In settings, Xbox has an option to make party chat output go through your headset, headset and TV, or TV.

but that's only for party chat. i've always wondered why xbox can't do the same for in-game chat too?

With in game chat, if your headset is plugged in; game chat automatically goes to the headset, with no option to have it output through TV.

really sucks when you can't wear headsets, you can't play socially outside of parties. (in party chat; i use my headset mic, but have their voice output through my TV. game chat has no option to do this, you must wear your headset to hear teammates)
