I agree with you regarding the fact that while it is nice to have a creepy environment & atmosphere in horror games, the story has to be interesting too.

Also, I would like to add the fact that while rewarding the player for killing an enemy with money / credits or whatever works in other games, it doesn't work in the Survival Horror genre at all.

The tension in Survival Horror games is knowing when to fight and run away. Rewarding the player with money / credits after each kill removes this element because the player will just buy more ammo / make their weapons more powerful as opposed to having
the need to find ammo / gun upgrade parts.

Honestly, the Doom series is the only horror game that I can think of that gives the players bucket loads of ammo and still scare you.

Normally, this situation (giving the player tons of ammo + the horror genre) don't go well together.
