    High power usage when instant-on


    Hello,

    My XSX uses lots of energy when switched off at Instant-On mode - after the night the device is more than warm (37C = 99F) after the night. It's way too much...

    I've checked with the power meter and the device pulls 24-26 watts, while being in the menus is like 65-70W which is totally ok.

    To get a reference - playing AC:V it's like 160-180W.

    I'd like to ask MS if it's possible to modify the behavior of the instant-on to lower the power draw. It could save megawatts worldwide...

    Power Brick noise - does it have an internal fan?

    This is the page that ChunkyDeMonkey was talking about, fan noise from the power brick is normal if you have your XBOX set to Instant-On, it uses power to keep Kinect listening. You'll only notice the noise after turning off your XBOX after use (high power
    usage). When it uses less power (Kinect listening only) it takes less to cool the power brick therefore less noise.

    If you have a high download usage then your system is most likely set to instant-on. This will put the system in a standby mode instead of actually turning it off when pressing the powerbutton. In this standby mode it will make sure that your games stay
    updated etc.

    You can put your console on powersaving mode by following the steps on this page

    Not using any sound enhancing thing.

    Waiting on my 5800x to check if it's because of sometimes high CPU usage. Because I usually get distortion when CPU usage is high on Halo.

    And maybe it's just coincidence.

    I'm not sure anyone at Microsoft can give you a definitive answer to the longevity issue when the system is in "Instant-On" mode. As another member said powering it on and off from a cold start may be more harmful than leaving it on all the time, YMMV. As
    to the power usage, there is a definitive answer to that at
    support.xbox.com/.../learn-about-power-modes     (15w in "instant-on" mode and .5 watts in "energy-saving" mode). It is up to you to decide if 15w is "a lot".

    Data/bandwidth use

    One way to reduce bandwidth usage when not using the console is to go into Settings/Power & Startup and switch Power Mode to "Energy Saving" instead of "Instant On."

    This will put the console in a low power state and stop it from auto-updating the system and games. The only drawback is that you cannot turn the console on using voice commands and the system will take longer to boot. But at least you can choose when the
    system and games will update this way.
