To answer your inquiry, the error is showing up due to your account's Xbox privacy settings. In order to fix this, follow the instructions below:

Sign in to your Microsoft account at Xbox.com.

Select your gamertag, and then select the More actions button (…).

Select Xbox settings, and then select Privacy & online safety.

Note Because you’re accessing sensitive info, you may have to enter your password or PIN.

Select either the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety tab or the Privacy tab.

Review the current settings and update all of the options as "Allow" and "Everyone", and then select Submit to save the changes.

Note You must select Submit at the bottom of the page before leaving or switching to another tab. If you don't submit the changes before you move to the other tab, your changes won't be saved.

Please keep in mind that if you are unable to access the Xbox privacy settings which can only mean that your account is a child account. A child account can't manage its own Xbox privacy settings.

(A child account is registered on the birthdate 21 years old and below upon the account's first creation

An adult account is registered on the birthdate 22 years old and older upon the account's first creation)

My microsoft account is not a child account but it still has the same "error message" when I sign in with a child account. (I'm saying error message as in "you cannot play realms because of how your microsoft account
is set up")

It is more of a message than error but it says "You cannot play on realms because of how your microsoft account is set up. Please ensure your online saftey settings allow multiplayer and clubs. See instructions for changing these settings as aka.ms/MCMultiplayerHelp."

hi, I’m trying to turn on online multiplayer on Microsoft Xbox setting and it still says you can’t join his realm because how your account is set up do you know how to turn on online multiplayer NEVERMIND it works

So me and a few of my friends are thinking about starting a Realms world together and i try to play on Realms and it says You Need Permission You cannot play on Realms because of how your Microsoft account is set up. This can changed in your privacy
and online safety settings on aka.ms/accountsettings. The aka.ms thing didn’t work for me and it brought me to xbox360 online settings. So I need to figure out what I have to change and how I do it. So if anyone can help please do so.
