Help with understanding Game Pass Ultimate vs Live Gold

Hello. I think this is an easy answer but I am finding this very confusing.

My kids have a monthly recurring subscription to Game Pass Ultimate. My understanding is that this includes Live Gold. But does it only include Live Gold and the ability to play multi-player games online with friends for those games that are available in Game Pass?

For example, they play a game called Gang Beasts alot and want to play multi-player online, but cannot do so with Game Pass Ultimate. They also cannot play Fortnite with their current Game Pass Ultimate subscription. It gives an error that 'there is an issue with Live'.

So, how does this all work? Do we need to also subscribe to Live Gold separately to also use multi-player play games that are not in Game Pass? If so, how? When I go to subscriptions it lists our current Game Pass Ultimate subscription as the only active subscription, but there is no option to add Live Gold. And when I go to the Xbox store there is no option to buy a Live Gold subscription.

I feel like I am missing something and this shouldn't be this difficult. Thanks.

Gold gives you the ability to play online in all games, whether they are in Game Pass or not.

Game Pass is like Netflix for games. You get access to library of games without having to purchase them all individually.

Game Pass Ultimate includes Gold, Game Pass for console, and Game Pass for PC. Since you already have Ultimate, if you were to buy Gold it would just convert it to Ultimate since you already have Gold.

Is Gang Beasts getting the same error that Fortnite is? (Fortnite actually no longer requires a subscription at all to play online).

With Fortnite, are they over 12 years of age? Just wondering if age restrictions on the accounts might explain that one

With both games, have you checked to make sure their XBox account has party chats etc enabled? I wonder if minor accounts have them turned off by default maybe?

Yes. Since they have Ultimate they can play online whether the game is in Game Pass or not. It doesn't matter.

Try doing a hard reset (hold down the power button on the console until it turns off, unplug it, plug it back in, then turn it back on).
