Help needed to improve gaming experience with xbox one x

Howdy

Ive asked a few people on social media how to make my gaming time with other people using one xbox more enjoyable and less frustrating. I thought I would try here as this is possibly the best place to be to get a better idea if I need to switch up consoles
or not.

I previously owned an xbox 360, and remembered it was fun to play so when I wanted to re visit the console choice I guess I preferred Xbox because I had already owned one, however since having an xbox one x since christmas 2017 Ive found my experience to be
really frustrating.

Im a family man, and most of the free time I have is used hanging out with people in the house, and although Im aware of other consoles that are more "family orientated" im still stuck with the issue of how do i make the best out of my current console and make
gaming with multiple people on the one console possible.

What im finding is that the xbox games are limited in ways that local co op and split screen only give me a few game selections, so I purchased a gold membership hoping I could still play on the same xbox with the same people but the games would be a wider
range if I had an online xbox membership.

Im still struggling to find games that are fun to play with other people using the same xbox and presumably the same tv, Which leads me to my main question.

Whats the best way to enjoy my gaming experience , with multiple people connected to the same console with an gold membership?

I cant afford another console right away, im already 1k deep into this console so I have to persevere and try to get suggestions from people within the capabilities I currently have, and not spend more money on what I dont have.

Im also having deep difficulty working out which games do what. For example one game I looked into said co-op but when I downloaded it, its co op with 2 consoles. I would really like some suggestions on games that are co op / split sceen.

Will a router improve a gateway connection?

A router with forwarded ports and open NAT settings would certainly improve your gaming experience!

Unfortunately gaming has gone the way of online multiplayer for the most part so it's getting harder to find local multiplayer games.

A gold subscription is for use with online multiplayer and would not affect being able to play locally.
