HELP 0x80242020 ERROR CODE

Hello chevysb,

Thank you for contacting the Xbox Support forums. I understand you are no longer able to install games to a specific drive on your device. Please try the following:

Change where new applications will be saved
Step 1: Press the Windows button

Step 2: Navigate to Settings

Step 3: Select System

Step 4: Select Storage

Step 5: Change where new content is saved. (If you are on Windows 11, this will be under the Advanced storage settings drop down)

Step 6: Change "New applications will be saved in" to the storage unit of your choice, in this case, the D: drive

If you are attempting to download the title from Game Pass on PC, please also do the following:

Change where new applications will be saved on the Xbox app

Step 1: Select your profile picture (should be top right of the app)

Step 2: Select Settings

Step 3: Select General
Step 4: Under "Change the location where the app installs games by default" select the same storage drive from your Windows settings. These drivers should be matching.

Please let me know if this resolves the error.

I have the same problem. When trying to download Sea of Thieves for the PC, I either get the error code 0x80242020, or it just allocates disc space indefinitely. Would appreciate some help..

Hi there KBragunier welcome to the community forum! Christopher here, an Xbox fan just like you and has been on Xbox for years already. I would really love to make your day by helping you out. I suggest you try these basic troubleshooting steps!

Open Settings, click Update and Security and then Windows Update;

Click Check for Updates;

Click the Download and Install Now option, if available;

Also, check the Microsoft Store for any updates on the Xbox apps and its services.

Then try this:

Go to windows settings > apps > search for gaming services app > click on it and select advanced options.

After that, click repair and then restore, open the app and try again.

Then do the same for the Xbox app:

Go to windows settings > apps > search for Xbox app > click on it and select advanced options.

After that, click repair and then restore, open the app and try again.

If it still doesn't work you're going to uninstall the games services using a powershell command, then you're going to open the gamepass app, it will ask you to download and install the game services again :

In the windows search bar type Powershell > Right click and select open as administrator > Type the command: "get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-Appxpackage –allusers" > Wait for the process to finish and then restart the PC, then open your Xbox gamepass app, it will ask you to install the gaming services again, install it and try again.

I'm now receiving error 0x80242020 after doing up to renaming windowsapps to windowsapps.old, I don't have a wpsystem.old folder so i can't rename the wpsystem folder itself
