Is the HDMI port on your laptop an HDMI in port or just an HDMI out port? Most laptops only have an HDMI out port if anything. You cannot get video in if you only have an HDMI out port.

How the Xbox One works with being able to control the TV is that the Xbox One has a HDMI In port and a HDMI Out port. If a person had a cable set-top box, they would take the HDMI cable from that and plug it into the HDMI In port on the Xbox One, and then
connect an HDMI cable to the HDMI Out port and connect that to the TV.



In your case, I think it could only work if your TV had both a HDMI Out port and a HDMI In port. If this is the case, which I don't ever think I've heard of a thing for just a TV (I guess it could be possible), then you would go from the TV's HDMI Out port
to the Xbox One's HDMI In port and from the Xbox One's HDMI Out port to the TV's HDMI In port.

I would just switch cable and see - could be on cable that things are off.

But if you know console fell to the floor and hit connector - then might be on xbox.

Buy cheapest cable, molded plastic - worked the best for me. From dvd/bd/xbox.

Only cable I had that got bad connector/cable was a $30 gold plated crap something.

I used hdmi cables and switches/selectors for almost 10 years now.

Never a problem with $7-$10 cables. Even 5m length first for PS3, then 360. So continued with same no-name stuff for X1.

Do you want to play in HD? If that's the case, you don't really NEED an HDMI output, just buy an HD Component cable from Amazon for a few bucks. But if you really want a new console, you can sell it on Craigslist, where you'll get the most money, or trade
it in to GameStop, like the other poster said, where they won't give you THAT much, and you'll most likely have to pay the difference.
