Gold trial didn't allow for purchase of discounted game.

Just to expand on what Owen has already said here, the reason that a trial does not show up as a gold account is because it isn't a gold account. All a trial account will allow you to do is sample some of the features of gold
(ie, online play). There are gold features, such as the free "Games With Gold" games, or gold exclusive marketplace discounts that you can not access on a trial account.

People on trial accounts =/= Cheaters.

People on new accounts =/= Cheaters.

Cheaters = Cheaters.

Sorry but a trial membership only offers some access to Live content. Unfortunately Deals with Gold or Games with Gold are not included in those features.

If you want the game for the full discount then you'd need to purchase a full Gold membership.

A Gold trial will allow you to use many Xbox Live Gold services, however it will not allow you to use benefits such as Games with Gold or Deals with Gold, since it isn't classified as a paid subscription.

On the bottom of
this page, you'll see the details letting you know that this is a feature only for paid subscriptions.
