You can buy the Battle Pass using your account balance, but not directly within the game.

Since the Battle Pass can only be purchased in-game, follow these steps:

• Purchase the amount of V-Bucks needed to buy the Battle Pass (the Battle Pass costs 950 V-Bucks).
  
• Use the purchased V-Bucks to buy the Battle Pass in Fortnite.
  

On the other hand, here are the things that we can check:

Check Gift Card Balance:

- First, ensure that your gift card has sufficient balance to cover the cost of the Battle Pass.

- Verify the balance by visiting the official website or contacting the gift card provider.

Redeem the Gift Card:

- If you haven't already, redeem your gift card on the platform where you play Fortnite.

- Follow the instructions provided by the gift card provider to redeem it.

Restart Fortnite:

Content purchased on Xbox One is intended for use on Xbox One. You won't be able to swap it for use on another console. If you want to buy content for use on PlayStation 4, you'll need to buy it through PlayStation 4's storefronts.

Since Fortnite is a cross-platform game, there shouldn’t be a problem gifting a battlepass from your son’s account on the Xbox One to his friend on PS4. I recommend purchasing the gifted battlepass in the Fortnite game/application, and not through the Microsoft
Store just to be safe. As long as your son and his friend meet the requirements for successful gifting shown in the link I’m attaching below, it should work fine.
