Gaming on the Xbox app runs laptop hot

I play an FPS on Xbox and a football game on Steam. I have the Xbox and Steam apps running at the same time as the games because that way I can still communicate with friends on the other screen, and the FPS actually requires that you be signed in in order to be able to play. I think the same's true for the Steam game.

What game are you playing when this happens and what are your system specs?

When playing games Laptop's get hot, this is quite normal. The Xbox app running in the background should not be the cause of your overheating. The app (when running normally) does not consume a lot of system resources.

It is not necessary to run the Xbox App when playing its installed games. Try searching for the game in the Windows Search bar and launching it. See if your system runs hot now.
