You would need a credit card/Paypal on file in order to download the 360 games with gold games, even though they're free. The 360 store is set up differently from the store on the One. The One does not see your Microsoft account balance as a valid payment
option for 360 content.

Assuming you are referring to xbox live gold memberships then the difference is price.

It's nearly always best to buy your gold memberships from a shop or online store as it's almost always cheaper than buying it directly on the xbox.

I imagine every game shop knows you can`t use xbox currency to buy gold time and should not be misleading you.

If you are buying from a different kind of store,like a supermarket, its unlikely they will know.

Now what exactly are you trying to do? Are you trying to play a game with someone that's in the same location as you or are you trying to play the same game as someone in a different location?

If the person is in the same location then it depends on the game. Most games like 2k, call of duty, and mortal kombat, have multiplayer modes that don't require internet. Other games are purely story mode and have no multiplayer.

If the person is in a different location then you'll need to have a stable internet connection and an active xbox live gold membership. You can purchase an xbox live gold membership from the microsoft store on your system or from the microsoft store online

I would probably say it is attributed to the fact your are not gold, as XBlive Market place is treated differently from the online store in certain games. The stores in games are like accessing a multiplayer game, in that it require specific rights to access
it. Those rights being gold in this case, therefore if you can, purchase or activate an Xblive subscription, if your fairly new to XB, your console may have shipped with a 1month free trial, otherwise you can try a 3month sub card or 1yr, from a retailer
and see if that works..

There are also 48hr trial codes, however they do not give full gold rights, so those are not a good method of checking whether or not going gold actually allows you to download the maps.

Do let us know what the results are. And also keep checking the in game store, just in case it was an error on their end.
