  1. Games I hate that you love

The following is a list of games that I dislike for a variety of reasons (some of which I will detail) that most people seem to think are masterpieces of some sort or other. Ive tried to try games that people told me are great but so many disappoint me
(not in the its 'not for me' category like fighting game, but in actual flaws or probably just in what i consider flaws). There are possibly spoilers below, so be aware. Im not trying to start an argument, just a (very simple) critical look at certain games.
I apologize for the length, but I thought some of the reasons I dont like these games are important, and in places it will contain opinions that I present as facts and Im sure I will contradict myself at times, so read it if you wish, or ignore.

    1) Bioshock (the original) - coming in as a surprise based on my avatar, I find this game horrible on many levels. Its overly complicated with needless weapons (shotgun works the whole game people!) and powers (did I really need 16 or more
of the things, i forgot I had most of them), its story is simplistic at best and seems to not have a full grasp of what Objectivism is, the 'moral' choices are not choices as if you dont rescue the little sisters you get less loot, and would some one kindly
explain to me how the 'twist' is interesting at all. I get that we were supposed to think that we had no choice and were controlled, but thats because we had no real choice, there was no other option, even after the 'twist' is revealed you still had to do
what the game told you to in order to get to the end. I do LOVE the art style tho and Big Daddys are super cute.

    2) Assassin's Creed (all of them) - I actually own all of them on various platforms except for 3 due to $5/10 sales. Ive tried to like these & I really want to like them as the idea is really interesting to me, but the execution is uuuuuugggggghhhhhhhh.
On a game that depends on smoothness of climbing and free running why does my character constantly stop or throw himself off buildings/cliffs. I get it, Im not pointing the stick exactly correctly or something, but thats the point, the game wants me to be
precise at times when the controls arent. Mirrors Edge made it smooth, why cant this? Not to mention the missions; I can only follow, pickpocket, loot crap for so long before I fall asleep (maybe that flaw is mine). And the combat is seriously terrible
and simple - I suck at combat in most games, but I rarely get hurt in these (it felt like Batman for children). I guess my problem with these games in general is that they do a whole lot of things worse than other games and none of them seem polished or fixed
    in later games.

    3) Half-Life 2 - My problem with this game is sort of similar to AC in that it tries to do some things that it cant do well. And most of that boils down to it being 1st person. What exactly is the point of 1st person? Id assumed it was
a limitation of graphics originally, given that your field of view is so restricted (ie no peripheral vision at all and it always seems like your character is crouching even when they arent.) it allowed devs to not have to draw a lot of things the user would
see in 3rd person. Which is a problem when platforming is part of the game. Asking a user to jump from rock to rock to avoid sand critters (or something) without knowing where your feet are is just mean and will lead to frustration. Puzzles werent a big
part of this game, but when they were they seemed inconsistant at best. Finally, the game seemed way way too long (i did not finish it, but i did have enough of it). I liked the Gravity Gun though. And I liked that there were no actual cutscenes, but other
    than that....

    4) Oblivion - I will preface this by saying that fantasy settings in anything are not something that I get me excited, but I do love jrpgs, and some western ones (I thought Kingdom of Amular was really good), but I really dont see the appeal
of this game. #1 is voice acting, or the SEVERE lack thereof. I used to think there were 3 voice actors doing everything, but I looked it up and its actually around 10 - for main characters & 1000s of NPCs. Literally every character you talk to sounds like
many others you already have encountered. Its very jarring in its own way and breaks immersion. #2 Bugs, bugs, and more bugs. #3 The main story - I have no idea what it is (ya i didnt finish the game), I think I was supposed to close oblivion gates (the
1st one was really fun), but I got bored after the 2nd one and decided to just wander around which made me realize how fragmented the game/quests are. There is literally no focus, Im not sure why someone wanted or trusted me to go get his birth certificate
from his home town, but I spent a lot of time doing it and it was related to nothing & and apparently all the main characters just stopped doing what they were doing to wait for me to finish. I think they still are - i feel kind of bad I have put there life
on hold. Why even have a story if there is no incentive to follow it?

    5) Bayonetta - I get it, she's a witch that has hair for clothes (bet someone really thought they were being clever there) and you can memorize a 20 button combos to make her kick and punch in a certain way. What else does it have? I couldnt
find it. This game is the very definition of complex but shallow.

I was going to mention a few more but they arent available on xbox (Shadow of the Colossus for instance). Feel free to dispute anything I said (just show your work with actual logic please) or give your own examples or give reasons why
you hate things I love (Portal, Trials, Shoot-em-ups) or just let the thread die. Take care all and happy gaming Games I hate that you love :)

    :)

Internet speed does play a factor, and sadly even the "best" internet speeds in the UK are still pretty woeful. And Lofty, yeah, complexity will also lead to the potential for more problems, hence that old addage of keep it simple, stupid Games I hate that you love :p

    -

But the cons are far from ruining my fun. Battlefield 4 is great, when it actually works, but little things like you say just nibble away at the whole experience.

YOU HATE SOTC?! Or did I read that wrong?

Anyhoo, I agree and disagree on Bioshock form a gamplay standpoint. You say needlessness complicated, I say I don't feel constrained.

    "Batman for kiddies" I AGREE

    I agree about Oblivion.

I dislike GTA IV. I also hate the Mass Effect games. They are sooo boring it hurts. People liked Ryse, but I thought it was just dumb.

I agree with Sin about Oblivion and brandiesel about GTA4. Now im not sure I really hate either of these games. Its more like I had such high expectations for both games after absolutely loving their previous games. When they released and didn't live
up to those expectations it left a bad taste in my mouth that'll never rinse away.

Hate is a bit strong but I tend to agree with the OP. Oblivion had some really strong points though, I'd rank it far away from hate.

Never had a desire to play any AC's, and I agree on Oblivion. The leveling system sucked. There was no point to leveling, especially since you could blaze through the main storyline and beat the game at level 8. Skryim was a big improvement.

I only played the first three games on your list, but I have to agree with you on Assassin's Creed. The issue with those games were that the combat was silly. After the first game they bombard you with different weapons and techniques and special abilities,
but you only ever need to use the hidden blade and longsword. Everything else is only useful if you are just generally trying to find a reason to use it. The freerunning was good because you could actually mess up and jump off a roof... until 3, where it
seemed to guide you in the right direction wherever you ran. It just feels like they dump on so many options but all you need to finish the game are a small percentage of those options.

Half-Life was a great game, for a myriad of reasons my all-time favorite shooter. Half-Life 2 was mediocre. It's not because it's first person. I don't understand the question of "why" it needed to be first-person here. Shooters started out that way.
Half-Life had many unique characteristics like creative weapons such as scientific prototypes and alien weapons that each had unique designs that made the way they were used distinct, rather than tacking on several guns with minor differences. The puzzle
aspect you mention was a huge part of the first game and made it challenging; you couldn't just clear out room after room to win, you had to figure out special triggers, etc. to progress. I can understand how that may frustrate people but I found it to be
a challenge not often found in shooters. Maps were creative and had special triggers in multiplayer to mix things up. Half-Life 2 had a lot of potential but it ultimately fell short compared to the first, because it toned down on what made the original great.

Games I hate that people love: The Last of Us, Rainbow Six Vegas, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted. I agree with you on the first Assassin's Creed, it wasn't very good.

  15. While all of these games are better than your average game, I tend to agree with most of your points, SIN. What made Bioshock so great to me was the atmosphere and the fact that it wasn't the trope filled run of the mill military shooter. It had a soul.
I agree with your points on Assassins Creed. The missions are like watching paint dry and the whole Animus angle just *** me off and made my eyes roll. Why couldn't Ubisoft just make a historical period piece about assassins. They didn't need the hokey Sci-FY
nonscence. Bugs, bugs, and more bugs pretty much sums up Oblivion. Tried to play that game on PC and Xbox. Both times resulted in corrupt save files about 60 hours in. Half Life 2 is just Half Life 2. I played it. I liked it. Haven't thought about it since.
Portal and TF are the best things about The Orange Box, IMO. Gimme more Portal, please. Only played Bayonetta for a minute. Seemed like a DMC clone, but in fairness, I didn't play enough to form a proper opinion. People say it's good though. Great thread,
    SIN.
