    Gamertag Purge Request?


    So I was looking to change my gamertag for sometime now, and I came across a gamertag that I would like that has been inactive for 12 years now. I remember reading somewhere that Microsoft updated their terms and conditions to state that once an account
    has reached a certain amount of years of inactivity that they would delete the account, freeing up the inactive gamertag for active use. Is this still the case? And can I make some sort of request to have the gamertag made available?

    Also, I want to make it clear that I understand Xbox has since implemented their new versions of gamertag with the numbering system, but it would be really cool to get the original as well.

    What happens to my Gamertag when my Windows Live ID is deleted?

    I didn't request for my Windows Live ID to be deleted but it is already in the process of being purged from the system.

    Does that mean that the Gamertag will be effectively locked?

    There will not be any more mass releases. As of August 30, 2019, if a person doesn't use their Microsoft account within 2 years, the account will be closed which should free up the tag.

    GTs are released after 5 years of inactivity starting from 2016 when the rule came into play.

    Could you not use the name under the new gamertag system? Only difference is there will be suffix with numbers to differentiate the accounts.

    At this stage thats the only option until the next purge and even then there is no guarantee that gamertag will be released.
