Paid $10 to change my gamertag, microsoft took my money just fine, cleared my bank account, but gave me an error saying "Failed to update" then didn't change my tag, and kept my $10, no options to contact support, it tells me I can chat with a gamer or browse a "How to change gamertag tutorial" like that's gonna help. Sony is looking a lot more tempting these days with this terrible service microsoft is providing. They have gone downhill since the xbox one came out.

I'm sorry that you are having problems updating your gamertag. To get a gamertag without a suffix (numbers), you must choose a unique name that no one else has used yet.

If you try to change the player tag and the system adds suffixes to the end, that means that player tag is already being used by someone else. The suffixes are an attempt to distinguish players from each other, as no 2 identical player tags can exist at the same time.

There is a one-time free player tag change; later changes will require a fee.

The option to change your player tag from what it was before is not yet available. When changing player tags, make sure it's for a long-term plan.

Below are ways to change your gamertag. You can choose one or, if it doesn't work, try another option:

Open a browser and go to https://social.xbox.com/changegamertag
If the browser you are using is not working, try another browser such as Microsoft Edge.

On your XBOX console: Sign in to your XBOX >> press the Xbox button on your controller, then select System > Settings > Personalization > My Profile > Customize Profile.

In the XBOX console companion app:

Home Menu >> open the XBOX console companion app >> sign in >> click your photo in the top left corner >> click change player tag

You can also change it using your XBOX app on your phone or Windows 10 PC.

I don't think you understood what I said. I paid $10 on my xbox 360 console after it said the name was available, it took my $10, then gave me an error saying "Couldn't update" and my gamertag wasn't changed, and i'm out $10.

First off it’s not a scam, they warn you that the gamertag is taken so they will add a prefix before you accept the change

I have been hit by the sane thing. I agree its s scam. Microsoft should be ashamed. Force change tag n make customers pay. Its a scam n microsoft has pissed me off for the last time. just by principles im buying playstation next.

Gamertag violation. Its an excuse to steal $ from gamers.

Im canceling xbox gold n going the playstation way.

Customer retention is based on customer service and logic, not hiding behind small print agreement forms that nobody reads.

Microsof has been running this gsmertag scam **** fif ond reason. Stealing $ from customers because they can.

In the past, a forced Gamertag change gave users the opportunity to change the offending Gamertag free of charge. Unfortunately, this gesture was prone to abuse, and many people simply chose new, equally offensive Gamertags. As a result, the Gamertag
enforcement process changed. A forced Gamertag change now automatically assigns a new Gamertag to the account, much in the same way a system-generated Gamertag is provided when you first sign up for Xbox Live.

If a player is unhappy with the assigned Gamertag and wishes to change it, he or she may purchase a new Gamertag through the

standard Gamertag change process.
