Gamertag "can't be accepted"?

I changed my name to fit the new Xbox gamertag system, and I totally regret it, because I wanted one without a suffix.

I went on the Xbox Social site to change my name again, and when I typed in my old username (), it said "This gamertag can't be accepted. Try another one."

It didn't let me use it with a suffix or without one, it simply didn't let me use that specific username. If I type in any other username, I'm sent to the next step of the gamertag change (basically, it works with any other name)

Why does this happen, and is there a way to fix this?

It's either taken by somebody or the Xbox system won't allow you to go back to a previous gamer tag.

The reason you can't change back is the gamertag you had before is 14 characters and the new limit is 12 with the gamertag change.

My son's gamertag changed without our knowledge. It had been used for years. Is there a reason why it may have changed?

If you receive a "That name isn't available. Try a different one.”
message, that means the Gamertag isn't available and you'll need to create another
one.

Thank you for taking the time to post this on the Xbox Forums. We understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with changing your Gamertag.

The reason you are unable to change your Gamertag to your old name, is because Gamertags are not recycled.

This means that if you change your Gamertag there is a chance you may be unable to use your previous tag.

At this point, you would have to wait until these tags are released in order to use it once more, however the last time this occurred was back in 2016 as per

this article, and before this event, this had not previously occurred. Xbox Customer Support would be unable to assist you on this.

I hope this was able to clear up any confusion this might have caused.
