GamerTag automatically change (Theory)

I am writing this because I am curious on why a lot of customers are experiencing some automatic GamerTag change even though the name is not containing an explicit or political characters.

They manage to confirm that they did not change it on themselves.

So what gives? Why the sudden automatic changes even though the name is all good and no bad words?

About my theory:

Some of the customers are using Xbox 360 and manage to create a profile (first time users) in it. Xbox 360 has a 15 characters limit. Further Xbox consoles after 360 like Xbox One and Xbox Series XIS has a 12 characters limit. If the customer manage to log
in his profile from Xbox 360 to Xbox One or the new Xbox Console, is this going to change the GamerTag automatically because of the character limit?

Also, using the webpage, if the customer is going to log in on account.microsoft.com, this will change the GamerTag automatically also?

Just wanted to make sure why all of the sudden changes even though the GamerTag is clean.

You can reply anything here. Just wanted to break this spell on why it automatically changes it.

I think you're supposed to get an email, but I'm not sure. It may just get changed. You'd have to go to http://enforcement.xbox.com to see if that's the case.

About the Force GamerTag change, they will receive an update for that, am I right?

I am also thinking on that matter as well. But my experience on Enforcement is not that accurate because others won't get any updates. Not sure why.

Anyone who had a tag that was longer than 12 characters can keep the tag until they change it again. It wouldn't automatically be changed for the new policy by logging in anywhere.

Tags are usually only automatically changed if they're given a forced gamertag change. I've also seen people think their gamertag has changed, but in reality they logged in with the wrong information and created a new account.

Thanks for the reply! Sounds like you've taken the right step in requesting a Case Review with the Enforcement team.
Should the Gamertag change be upheld, and you are unhappy with the assigned Gamertag and wish to change it, one may purchase a new Gamertag through the standard Gamertag change process as our Ambassadors have indicated. However, the
Gamertag that received the forced change will remain unobtainable. I recommend taking a look at our Enforcement site's tips for creating a Gamertag for future use should you need it: https://enforcement.xbox.com/home/staysafe#topic9.
