[Gamertag] Are the numbers after the # sign supposed to be hidden in-game? Why can't I go...

I used to have the gamertag "", since more than a decade ago. Recently, while playing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 I noticed it was oddly stylized like "EIGHTFIAT" (an I instead of an L, checked by copy and paste), which is weird but I think might've been caused at some point by some kind of account migration event, so I requested a change to "" using the automated system. Since "" was taken, it said it would give me "#8460". I accepted it, because I figured that the numbers would be hidden in-game like it is in other game-related clients like Discord, Battle.net, etc. Well now it seems like my gamertag is "8460" in all games, which doesn't look that good to me. I'm pretty certain I used to have "" with an L, because I did a search for that gamertag and it shows my activity.

On a whim, I tried to change back to "" but it gives me the error message in red below. Are the numbers after the # sign supposed to be hidden in-game? Can I just go back to ""?

Not all games support the new gamertag system. So in those games the numbers show as part of the tag.

The only way to go back would be to change your tag to something else and then back after the system frees up the tag as long as no one else gets it too.

Im having the exact same issue, the problem is that looking around I saw that after the first gamer tag change it was no longer free and you have to pay for a new gamertag change, wouldnt this be like:

Change my name to something else>hope no one takes my original name>pay for a new gamertag change for a name> go back to the name I already had but without those annoying numbers?

and wouldnt the people who already changed it bc they thought the numbers wouldnt show pay the gamertag change twice? 🤔

really...... so you're suggesting in a fast paced multiplayer game (that usually can't pause) we're supposed to go to that person's gamertag, go to their gamercard and file a complaint or add them.... then how is the feedback system supposed to work if you
can't even label people that are cheap or cheaters or glitchers or whatever you want to call them.... how can you complain about them if you can't even find him after the match has ended?

FAIL! why would microsoft even remove such a simple feature that I'm sure could not take up that much RAM

That is your gamertag so that' swhy its stated like that. It is not unique so that is why you have a suffix. There are tons with that tag so the number is needed I suppose. That number is part of your tag.

Why can't you just sign in on the new console with the account that purchased the games? That is how you are supposed to do it.
