Gamertag already taken, except it's not

I was planning on changing my gamertag, a couple months ago I checked if the new gamertag that I wanted was available, and it was. I could have paid and it would have worked, but I wanted to wait a little bit. Today I tried to change
it, but it said it's already taken, even though I checked myself and it isn't.

Is there a way to get help from Xbox support to change my gamertag "manually" or perhaps something else ? Thanks

Hello CraZy,

We understand that there is a gamertag that you would like for your Microsoft account, but the status of the name is currently taken when you try to enter it.

Unfortunately, not much can be done about this situation but to wait for the availability of the name itself to which some inactive accounts get the names thrown back into the server to which they become available again. You can read more on this from Major
Nelson through this article.

Sorry, but no. If the gamertag is already in use on the system, there is no way to request it. The tag system is also in use on other Microsoft services so even if it isn't being used on the 360, it could be in use somewhere else.
