Gamer Tags: available, unavailable & inactive accounts

Have inquired through general support chats (ref: 1507620911) about gamer tags that aren’t allowed for no good reason, ones that have been inactive for years and when old gamer tags that are unused will be made available again.

The earliest any unused gamertags would be made available again is around August 2021.As from 2019,if a account is not signed into on any of microsofts services for 2 years then it may be made available but there are restrictions to this.

If a account is banned then the gamertag is also made unavailable.

You need to remember that gamertags are used on other Microsoft services so just because a profile has 0 gamerscore & looks inactive doesn't mean that it is.

I appreciate the reply, I was already aware of the date that available gamer tags were marked for being released again, however I was more so looking towards discussing with the enforcement team in terms of gamer tags how antiquated some of the ways they’ve
interpreted and employed the code of conduct and how one might even inquire to get a specific name released.

Hi Ronin,

As there are many different reasons why a gamer tag will not show anything, its impossible to speculate as to why. What we do know that if you are getting the gamer tag is unavailable then someone is using that gamer tag, or they are using it as we stated,
or the account is inactive. As posted the account needs to be inactive for a certain period of time before the gamer tag is released. If you are really wanting this gamer tag then you can keep trying for it every so often. With that I will be locking this

It's not an inactive account...its not being used at all.

Microsoft is not a single entity that makes decisions so how can microsoft decide when unused tags are available? Is there a branch of Microsoft who handles this directly? Is there a way to communicate with them? Why are unused tags unavailable to begin
with?
