Gamer tag taken by inactive player.

can be in use on other parts of the Microsoft network, also if tied to a Microsoft account and this account is in use on a windows based system then it will be active, i have a special gamertag that has 0 score, i have had this one since 2005 and is active but not active if you get what i mean. if it truly is not in use then would be released after 2 years or 5 years if the Microsoft account is not used. if the account was ever banned then it will never be available or if there is currency still on the account.

It is not possible, even if the person does not use the account but uses other Microsoft services the account will remain active.

The enforcement team does not look at these forums. If a GT is already taken, regardless of the fact of inactivity, it cannot be chosen by another player. MS has released old tags in the past but they do not alert players when or what tags are released.

Chances are if it won't let you claim that tag, it is taken by someone else or set to expired/inactive. But, it will be a long time before the tag is available if it is expired/inactive. But, out of curiosity, what is that tag?

Sorry, but support gave you incorrect information. If the system says a tag is taken, then there is no way to get that tag. The tag system is in use on other Microsoft services, so even if it's not being used on a console, it could be in use elsewhere. Also,
the system doesn't see things like spaces as making a tag unique. So if you look up "gamertag" it may not come up right away, but still be shown as in use if it's written as "gamer tag".
