I recently was able to get back into my old email address.

I logged back into xbox to continue playing on my old gamertag with same email.

but it gave me a different gamertag.

how do I get back my old gamertag? with all the games and such I had on that account?

If you can recover other profiles besides your own, you will need to give phone support a call about the issue at 800-4MY-XBOX.

Router, it let me recover my friends account, but it still wont let me recover mine.

Are all your old games there still and your gamer points, or is it a completely new account?

If everything is still there, you may have had the gamertag reset. This could be because it violated the code of conduct. You can check here: https://enforcement.xbox.com

Also if your account has not been used for some length of time, your gamertag may have been released back into circulation.

unfortunately as your ex owns the microsoft account there is nothing that can be done.

Microsoft account and gamertag are tied to each other and only the owner can use it.
