Why do digital copies of games cost the same as hard copies? Shouldn't there be a discount in the digital version seeing there is substantial decrease in the manufacturing cost side?

I would of thought around the same price as what Lofty Who said. £30 at tops.

  3. Game Pricing

I would like to know how the pricing is worked out in certain countries. As I clicked on Mad Max in the ZA store. It routed me to the US store where the game is currently marked down to 10$ however I need to purchase it in the ZA store, so I change the link
to take me to the ZA store and low and behold the game is now R450 (32$) 12$ more than the normal price on the US store.

How does this work? As to me this is daylight robbery! Our currency is weaker than the dollar by a 13:1 ration and then we still get ripped a new one with game pricing.

Because they don't want to undercut retail. If they did, then retailers might refuse to sell the hardware(consoles, controller, etc.). I don't like it, but that's business for ya.

Assassins Creed Unity and Call of Duty are still 60 bucks on Steam. Why would the price go down just because its not put on a cheap disc in a cheap plastic case?

  6. it might have something to do with the cost of servers and whatnot. more games come out taking up space, need more servers. more people online downloading games, need more servers...

I highly doubt there is a "substantial decrease in the manufacturing side of costs" when it comes to that digital copy. There are no more instruction manuals and the cost of that flimsy piece of plastic and a disc is probably a few pennies when you purchase
in bulk as I'm sure they do.

^^No one ever takes bulk purchasing into account when thinking why digital and physical are the same price.

  9. We're still getting a ton of digital sales these days, so in my opinion the costs kind of level out in a way. Just wait for a deal or get the physical copy used at some point.

  10. digital should be considerably cheaper, but it probably never will be. I just wait for a sale on digital games and buy then.

    Why "should" they be?

I agree on waiting for a sale, but was just curious about your initial statement.

It's simple supply and demand. If people are willing to pay full price for a digitally downloaded game as opposed to buying it in stores, then the companies will keep meeting the demand requirement.

Plus, when downloading a game you're also paying for convenience.

The developers love the fact of digitally purchased games because it entirely removes the second-hand market. For example, letting a friend borrow your games or you selling them to stores like GameStop who purchase used games for a certain price then turn
around and resell it for a nice profit. The margins are good and it's money the game developers don't get a piece of. The used gaming market has grown exponentially.

@jimhsnr - Your calculation is wrong

Xbox US store $60 Ie: £40

Don't forget that in the US tax is applied at checkout and is not part of the listed price, and this varies greatly from state to state, then in the UK the companies have to include sales taxes and VAT in the price listed.

if it was not for tax and VAT we would be virtually paying the same as the US.
