Game Pass PC titles failing to deploy; access denied (error 0x80070005)

    Hello,

I am a Game Pass for PC member and Xbox Live Gold subscriber. For about a year now, I have had a persistent issue where when I try to install PC Game Pass titles, the install "completes", but trying to launch the game crashes the Xbox app. Then, when the app is re-opened, the game icons appear with the message "Unable to download". The games' Install Queue icons then contain a generic error message with code 0x80070005.

I wanted more information on the error so I checked AppXDeployment-Server/Operational logs in the Event Viewer and found this XML string in the details of one of them:

    So far, I have:

    • Restarted my PC
    • Uninstalled and reinstalled the game
    • Signed out and back in to Xbox app
    • Signed out and back in to Microsoft Store
    • Reset Microsoft Store using /wsreset command
    • Scanned for corrupted files using sfc /scannow command
    • Scanned the disk image using Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth command
    • Restarted Gaming Services and Xbox-related services in the Services app
    • Updated Windows 10 to 2H22 using the Media Creation Tool
None of these have worked, and I am no longer sure what to do. Any help provided would be much appreciated, thank you.

    :)

Game Pass PC titles failing to deploy; access denied (error 0x80070005)

    Georges,

I ran CHKDSK and restarted my system, but I had trouble finding the logs associated with the check, so I ran REPAIR-VOLUME in PowerShell as an administrator and found no errors. I tried installing the game again but the same errors occurred.

However, when looking for those event logs, I did find this:

    Event 1001, Windows Error Reporting

    Fault bucket , type 0

    Event Name: AppxDeploymentFailureBlue

    Response: Not available

    Cab Id: 0

    Problem signature:

    P1: 80070005

    P2: 22

    P3: 2

    P4: windows.visualElements

    P5: 10.0.19041.2486

    P6: 5043

    P7:

    P8:

    P9:

    P10:

Piggybacking off of this, I found this error event associated with the original one I shared:

    Event 303 AppXDeployment-Server

error 0x80070005: While preparing to process the request, the system failed to register the windows.visualElements extension due to the following error:

    Access is denied.

    Are these errors related?

In your description I see that you already ran an SF, try to perform a CHKDSK on your PC.

    CHKDSK

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server...

1 - Type cmd (Command Prompt) in the search bar of the Start menu and then click Run as administrator.

    2 - Enter chkdsk /f/x/r/v

The system will ask you if you want to run CHKDSK after restarting the system, press Y on your keyboard and then type "Exit" and restart the computer, it will scan in DOS mode.

    Georges,

I tried what you asked: I reset the permissions in the WpSystem folder and renamed it to WpSystem.old. Unfortunately, the fix didn't work. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Hello, first it's a pleasure to be able to help you today.

My name is welcome to the community.

Hello RGKRISTOS, we have received several occurrences with this same error here in the community, there is still no official position regarding the correction of this bug.

However try following the procedure below which seems to work in some cases.

"I found a solution. I had to give permission for the WpSystem folder and rename it to WpSystem.old."

    Hi,

Error code 0x80070005 is an access denied error. Did you take this other drive from a different PC or previous Windows install?
