"Friend" keeps booting son off live somehow..

Hi. When my son is playing online with his mates one person who doesn't like him sometimes also joins in and tells him he's going to disconnect him from the game. Seconds later he's been disconnected....are we being hacked?? Any info would be great
on how to resolve this. Thanks.

hi, sorry to hgear this.

it sounds like your son is being DDoS attacked.

What should I do if I think I've been attacked?

If you think that your Xbox console or computer has experienced a DoS or DDoS attack, do the following:

Reset your Internet router.
Contact your ISP.
If you are certain of the identity of the DoS or DDoS attacker:
- Contact the attacker’s ISP.
- File a complaint against the player with Xbox Live. Select the "tampering" category on the complaint form.
Avoid that individual on Xbox Live in the future.

turning off power to your router for 5 minutes should issue you with a new IP so if you get DDoS attacked and booted offline, doing this will allow you to get back online, but most importantly you should report the player.

Thanks for your reply. It's another pupil from his school that's doing it so he does know him.

The thing is it's only the xbox that is affected and nobody else online at the same time..

The person is using a so called "Distributed Denial of Service" to send immense amounts of garbage data to your home's internet connection. So much garbage, that your internet connection can't handle it, and disconnects.

This is illegal in most countries, and if your son knows who is doing this, you should report that to the police as well as your Internet provider, so they can log that DDoS attack and take legal action as well.

In the mean time, your son should avoid playing in the same game lobby as that person, as by playing in the same multiplayer game, the attacker can find the IP address your home is connecting to the Internet, and can therefore attack it.

If your internet connection is attacked by a DDoS, simply turn off your router/gateway for a few seconds.

After reconnecting, your ISP will usually give you a new IP address, and the DDoS attack will still go to the old address. So you should be able to connect again.
