Free first gamertag change makes you pay

So I want to change my gamertag and since it is my first time changing my gamertag, it should be free, but when I go to claim the gamertag, it tells me to pay 10 dollars for it even though it should be free since this is my first time changing my gamertag. Any idea why this would be happening?

You are only given a free change if you were given a randomly generated tag when you signed up and are changing that tag for the first time. If you chose your gamertag when you signed up, you have already used your free change.

The first chance to change the gamertag is free - the second is not.

Its a way to make sure you really want that gamertag and it is your desired name since you'd be stuck with it (unless you pay for another/get it changed for being inappropriate)

For new accounts with randomly created gamertags the free gamertag change only applies to the first 30 days
