    Fortnite is free to play, but for all xbox online games you need to buy xbox live.

    Fortnite is free on Xbox.

    Unless you are referring to needing to have Xbox Live Gold in order to play it, which Gold does have a cost and is needed to play online multiplayer.

    There is currently a promotion going on for 1 month of Game Pass Ultimate for $1 which will grant you access to 100+ games for free including Fortnite!

    Hello, We are XBOX over here. So no we will not be doing anything that Playstation has going on!!!! Fortnite since day one has been free-to-play which makes the game FREE with some in app purchases only if you want them. You need to have Xbox live in order
    to play the game. Pretty much even if it wasnt fortnite you still need Xbox Live to play most of the games offered.

    Hello, To play Fortnite is halfway free. You need to have an XBox live subscription plus if you want to buy in game items you need to pay for that. The game itself is free though.

    You will need an XBox Gold membership to play any games online. You can also buy monthly XBox gold cards.
    PS also requires their memberships to play online games

    Except of Fortnite, reason is that they are rising their console profit selling rate by making fortnite free to play without membership

    Then why not xbox can make fortnite free to play without xbox live gold membership
