Flight Simulator use in a classroom

I already have 15 computers and controllers as well as a copy of the game for each machine. Nobody in the district was interested in helping me put this together, but now the district IT department is telling me that I can't do it this way because of "legal issues." I'll have 20+ students using the machines so I can't associate a game individually as of now. The idea was to sign on to the computer and use the software that was installed, sort of like going over to your buddy's house and playing their xbox.

The game is not licensed for use except as an entertainment product for use in homes to my knowledge.

Your IT department/computer guy has a Microsoft reseller or agent they coordinate with. You should ask them to find out what options may be available to you.

Mind you I think it’s a great thing, Please also be aware that the game has significant hardware requirements well beyond what you usually find in a school. A computer capable of running the game before any Sticks, yokes, rudder pedals etc starts around $1000, and the computers schools usually buy are not upgradeable

The old old DOS flight SIM you could I know cause I used it in 95 when I smashed the 2000 dollar camera by accident while filming my lesson for my assignment

Right, that’s the licensing I described

If you’ve ever watched a movie and seen “this film is licensed for non commercial exhibition in the home” it’s the same thing. Their contracts, with airplane manufacturers, anirlines, and other owners of intellectual property featured in the game, did not include the rights to sell it to institutions or use it in an arcade style setting. It’s the same reason why schools have to rent films from a particular service that specializes in institutions.

This is pure speculation based on my personal experience but I would expect that there is a whole kettle of legal fish of your product being used for real training purposes that MS just doesn’t want to get into.

Did they come to you and tell you you needed to stop? Or did they just reject it when you asked them?

Hi James, I'm Luis a Xbox user just like you. Thanks for reaching out us here. You can get by with one copy per machine but if you want each student to have their own progress you will indeed need a copy per student. This is the case only if more each machine is used by more than one student though
