    External USB SSD

My friend has purchased a WD_Black P50 (500GB) SSD. it came with a usb 3.0 to usb-c cord. when plugged i to the xbox it only recognises it as a media device. I'd like to store games on it (run games on it if possible).

I've factory default the settings of the xbox. moved the AC to its own outlet so its not shared power. I've updated it. I've unplugged it for over 10 seconds to powercycle it and ive tried every usb plug on it. ive even tried my own usb 3.0 cords instead of WD blacks. it says its too slow when trying to select it as a capture location.

Ive seen videos of it working perfectly fine. whenever i plug it in it instantly detects as media. ive formated it on pc to try it inbetween every option. but it just wont format on xbox.

im using an xbox series one s

    :)

Hello, StrikerG. Thanks for reaching out! My name is Lucas, and I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user just like you. I'll be happy to assist you today.

Are you using NTFS as the file system when you format it on your computer? Would you please double check it just to be sure?

Also, when connecting it to the console, please try to format it on the console too (just please be sure it is using NTFS first):

    - Press the Xbox button > Settings > System > Storage. Plugin the external storage and it should appear on this page.

    - Highlight the external drive, press the A button and select Format > Choose games and apps.

See how it goes and please let me know. Feel free to ask back any question you might have.

I believe there is something wrong with the SSD, not with the consoles. Not exactly a hardware issue or that the SSD is faulty, it is probably a software or configuration issue.

Would you please try to create a new partition on your external SSD on your computer?

    - Go to Start > Search and click on Disk management.

    - Select your external SSD.

    - Right-click on the partition and select the Delete volume.

    Then, create a new partition:

    - Right-click on the unallocated space on the external SSD area and select "New simple volume" to create a new partition.

    - On the wizard, choose the volume size (max), drive letter (try changing it from G:), and file system (choose NTFS).

Remove your external SSD and connect it to the computer again. See if it is still NTFS. Try to test it on both your consoles. If it still does not work, please let me know so we can test if this external SSD is using a USB 3.0 connection on your computer.

the issue is that the console does not give the option to format. and yes i have formated it as ntfs via windows 10

Alright. I've done the first two paragraphs above. Ive changed the Drive letter to X: , I've also named the volume Game Drive so it sticks out more for me to see and finally quick formatted it.

After ejecting the SSD and then reconnecting it it stays as an NTFS. Connecting it to the xbox one s, it immediately detects it as a media drive and gives no options to format. Reconnecting to pc, its still under the NTFS file system.
