External SSDs No Longer Work With XBOX Series S

I have seen versions of this question posted online but I would like to add a slight variant to it. I have 2 different external SSDs USB 3.0. One is very cheap, from Amazon the other, just cheap (a Walmart brand "onn"). Although cheap I ensured that the read/write speed, total space, ext met requirements. They worked great for aprox 6 months. Then, one day they didn't. I had them unplugged because I transferred the console to another room. Upon plugging in the console slowed to a crawl and crashed. When it opened back up games were gone. Both can be read by computer without issue. The Xbox series s can no longer even register the generic brand. After checking and reformating the "onn" I was able to transfer 2 Xbox one games at most 20mbs. The third game only got to about 70% and gives error. Furthermore, if the XBOX Series S USB is engaged, the Xbox cannot function. It has trouble even opening a Netflix app. For example, if I plug in turtle beach recon wired controller, it works for about 10min and the controller shuts off and the Xbox is is unable to perform simple tasks saying, "try again later". I have ensured all updates and done several hard resets. After the hard reset, the Xbox works; however, if I plug anything into USB port, it curls up in corner to cry (or maybe that's me hard to tell at this point). I know a similar question has been asked several times on here; however, I have yet to come across anyone who mentioned that their external SSDs were working great until they weren't. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    :)

    Xbox series s

Depends. If they are physical versions then yes as the Series S has no disc drive. If they are digital versions then no.

A small few companies may charge for the X/S upgrade but the majority are free & any X/S version must be on the internal SSD to work or the external SSD card if you have one.

Thinking of picking up an SSD for Xbox Series S

Bear in mind, even faster SSD external storage only works for Xbox One and Xbox One X enhanced games. They won't work with Series X|S games. You can store these games on these drives, but you can't play them.

NVME is a waste of money as the USB 3.1 ports maximum bandwidth is 5Gb/s (or 500MB/s).

If you want an SSD for your Xbox One or Xbox One X enhanced games, then your best choice is a SATA SSD connected either via a SATA to USB 3.1 adaptor or an USB 3.1 external drive enclosure.

Why does my friend have to copy a game from his external to his internal hard drive?

If he has a Series S/X and is trying to play a Series S/X optimized game, it will only run on the internal drive or on an expansion card made for the Series S/X. It won't run on a regular external hard drive or SSD.
