  1. External media hard drive is no longer working on Xbox Series X after September 24th update

    Hi,

Ever since the Xbox update on September 24th my WD 4tb harddrive for media is no longer being discovered by my Xbox. I have tried resetting the Xbox as well as reformatting the hard drive to NTFS. My computer can read it with no issues.

I have another WD 2tb media hardrive that is discovered on the Xbox that is also NTFS.

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem, or has any suggestions?

    Thanks for the help.

    :)

Hello TristanArcher! I'm Claus, an Independent Microsoft Community Consultant for Xbox! Glad to be able to help you!

If you have already formatted your hard drive on your PC and it still doesn't recognize it on the Xbox, try to format the hard drive to exFAT (where you formatted it to NTFS) and then connect it to the Xbox. After connecting to the Xbox, follow these steps:

    1. With the console on, press and hold the Xbox button on the console itself until it shuts off.

    2. Unplug it from the wall for 30 seconds.

    3. Connect it to wall again.

    4. Turn it on.

    5. Check if the console can see your hard drive on the Storage settings.

You can also follow some steps from the Xbox Support page, which I'll send you here:

Solution 1: Make sure you’ve installed any recent updates to Xbox

It’s possible that there were recent updates to your Xbox console and that you need to manually update your system so that it detects your external storage. To update:

    1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide, and then select Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates.

    2. If you see Update available, there’s an update you need to install.

    3. After you’re done installing the update, go back to Settings and select System > Storage devices. See if your device appears in the list.

If your storage device still doesn’t appear, or if there were no pending updates, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Adjust the power management for storage if you’re in instant-on mode

Check your power settings. If you’re in instant-on mode:

    1. Press the Xbox button  to open the guide.

    2. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Power mode & startup.

    3. Confirm that your Power mode is set to Instant-on.

    4. Unselect the option When Xbox is off, turn off storage.

    5. Restart your Xbox, and then go back to Settings and select System > Storage to see if your device now appears in the list.

Solution 3: Other things to try

If your Xbox still isn’t detecting your external storage device:

-> Remove and then reconnect the storage device.

-> Connect the device to a different USB port on the console.

    -> Power cycle your console:

Press the Xbox button  on the front of the console for about 10 seconds.

Turn on the console again, and then see if it detects the external drive.

-> Check the website of your external storage device’s manufacturer for additional support.

Unfortunately, in this case, it seems necessary to report this bug to the Xbox Team. You can download the Xbox Insider Bundle, from the Microsoft Store. After that installs, press and hold the Xbox button on your controller, and select Report a problem. Fill out the report afterwards.

It could also be a good idea to contact the Xbox Support directly to get more help in solving this issue.
