u think they will eventually add 3rd party HDD internal support

Saw some arguing about it, so figured I'd help people understand.

External HDDs that are a 2.5mm drive will not have an external power source.
External HDDs that are a 3.5mm drive will have an external power source. These drives also tend to be bigger.

But to go back on-topic, being able to plug in an external is a much better option than having to replace your hdd and reinstall everything. Would it be nice to have both? Sure, but the box wasn't made that way so it's not going to happen.

    External HDD Help.
Yeah you have to format it and it will only allow an external drive partition of 16GB.
You misunderstand the question.

The OP is not wanting to use the drive as 360 storage but rather to play media such as music and movies from it.

In that case you can pretty much use any size hard drive you want as long as it is formatted in a system the 360 understands, FAT32 or HFS+. For connecting directly to the 360 HFS+ is the better option as it allows files over 4gb in size, where FAT32 does not.

It doesn't really matter that the hard drive is formatted as if streaming via a PC.

    external hdd help

    Hello Sniparz!

Sorry this issue is affecting your xbox time. As far as I know, the entire drive needs to be formatted to the Xbox One's FAT32 file type. When you are using this drive on a home computer, I'm assuming your reformatting the drive back to Window's file type
to place a video on the drive, or perhaps creating a partition.

Long story short, the only way to play this media is to have it dropped into a partition on the drive and have another partition dedicated to the Xbox One. I believe the minimum limit is 32 GB.

  6. Your HDD should be formatted to NTFS once you have done that plug back into console see if that solves it.

You cannot use media data on the same hdd that you use for game storage or the other way round.

    External HDD Help.

Are you connecting the drive directly to one of the 360's USB ports?

    -

If that is the case then the drive will need to be formatted as FAT32 or HFS+ (file system used on Macs.

If you are trying to steam media from your PC, make sure the drive is shared in whatever application you are using to stream.
