External Harddrive and Xbox one X issue.

not sure if this is the correct section to post, but the issue I'm having is this.

I have the Xbox One Seagate 8TB GameHub. When connected to either of the 2 USB ports on the back I seem to get this issue but not on the front. Basically if I "soft" turn off my console the hard drive and Xbox power down no problem at all. However if I "Hard"
turn off the console the hard drive does not turn off and after approx 10-15 seconds it turns my Xbox Back on. I have checked all settings and made sure the "power down when Xbox is off" setting is turned on which it is and it seems to work but only when I
    "soft" turn off the console.

The only way to fix this is to use the front USB port. If I use the front USB port then the hard drive turns off in both situations and does not turn my Xbox back on when fully shut down.

Yeah I know I could just use the front USB port and issues are solved but that's not how my setup is and I don't want any wires on show in case my toddlers grab them.

Is there a reason the rear USB ports seem to continuously provide power even when completely shut down?

    :)

Yet another weird X Box One X issue.

So recently i wad having an issue where my one x would shut down on its own. I took it back to the store and they exchanged it brilliant.

    The issue is this...

My xbox comes to work with me every day in a protected carry bag so im plugging and unplugging every day. Thats fine not a problem.

However what is strange is if i plug my wall powered external harddrive into my One X BEFORE i put the power cable into the one x then the console will not turn on until i unplug the harddrive. If i put the power cable into the one x theb plug the harddrive
    in then its fine.

What can be causing this? I know for a fact i wasnt experiencing this issue with the one x i had before this one. But i could possibly have been putting the power cable in first the whole time and not realized.

    Pop sound

Mine does not have that issue you described. It's eerily silent. I now however do notice the godawful noise my external harddrive makes. I didn't notice that with the Xbox One but with the One X it becomes really noticeable.

Have you set the Xbox One to turn off external storage devices when you shut it off?

If you're currently in Instant-On mode, follow these steps to adjust the power management for storage:

    1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
    2. Select Settings.
    3. Select All settings.
    4. Select Power.
    5. Go to Power mode.
    6. Unselect the checkbox next to “When Xbox is off, turn off storage.”

Can I use an external harddrive to run my xbox?

Something's wrong with your initial statement "500gb Xbox One X" The Xbox One X has a 1tb harddrive.

In answer to your question is no you can't run it from an external drive you will need to get your xbox repaired.

Is there a way to save DVR clips to external hard drive?

If you have an external hardrive pluged in to your xbox one the system will then take the xbox ones main harddrive and use it for a backup for when your external harddrive becomes full. As far as takeing games and apps from the xbox one harddrive to an external
yes that can be done by going to the setting and goto system setting and click on manage storage and select your system storage
