External Drive storage

Basically I’m looking to buy a new Xbox soon and I have an external hard drive with a lot of game storage on it.

If I plug my external drive into my new Xbox will all the game data that was on that drive save to my new Xbox

Is this game stored on your Internal Storage or External hard drive? If it's on your External Hard drive kindly move it to your Internal Storage then remove the hard drive. This is to check if it's due to the external hard drive.

Do you know if the missing games are on internal or external storage? It sounds like the Xbox is not seeing the external drive. Try unplugging your external storage and doing a full shutdown of the Xbox. While it is off, plug in the external drive and then
turn the Xbox back on. Go to Settings > System > Storage and see if the drive is there. From there you can also view the content of both internal and external drives.

Then yeah, you can plug it into the new console and use it like that or transfer from the hard drive. Any games that are optimized for the Series S/X will not run from that drive, but you can store them on it. So you may have some games that will have to be moved to the internal drive on the Series S.

What type of Xbox is your current console and what type of new one are planning on getting?

The data should move over fine that way, but depending on the console you may not be able to use it to play all games.
