external 3TB hdd drive fail

The external drive is not recognized, before spending a ton of time on an old hdd drive I will upgrade to ssd. question is whether my game progress is saved in the cloud, as have always been Xbox Gold Live subscriber but don't remember setting anything
special up for this. talking about 1,000 plus hours. If it does not save in the cloud I guess I need to recover the failed hard drive?

As long as you had a properly functioning internet connection then your game saves should be saved/synced to the Xbox Live cloud.

Have you tried connecting your HDD to a PC to see if it is recognized there? If it is, don't allow system to format or initialize it as you will lose the content on it. If the PC sees it, try connecting it back to your console using a different USB port.

did that, still not working. have space left on console hard drive so will save a couple games back to that and see about saved progress and make choices from there. thanks so much!!!

Hi,

Just because your hard drive isn't being recognised doesn't mean it's failed. Same thing happened to one of my drives a few years ago. I reformatted using Windows Disk Management, it's still working now.

An SSD while great performance will be expensive, at least 3x the cost of your current drive, and that's for a 2TB drive.

As for your saves, as long as you've been connected to Xbox Live while playing your games, there will be copy stored in the Xbox Live Cloud. A Gold Sub is not required for this on Xbox One.
