Entering a long password on an Xbox

The character limit on a password to a Microsoft account is 127 characters. I want to make the password to my Microsoft account more secure by creating a password that is around this length and storing the password in a password manager. My problem with doing this is entering the entire password on my Xbox to login. Whenever I change my password, it logs me out of my Xbox live account so I have to enter the password to log back in. Additionally, when I tried to enter the password using the keyboard function in the Xbox app on my phone, it would not work because the Xbox app can only connect to Xboxes that are signed in to Xbox live. How can I enter a longer password on my Xbox? Should I continue using a shorter and less secure password for my Microsoft account?

Hi Androy518,

I believe 127 characters is the limit for MS accounts, so there's really no way around that.

What you can do is install the Microsoft Authenticator app (Google Play, Apple App Store) and use it either to replace the login using password or as an OTP generator after you enable 2FA for your account, to make sure no one logs into your account without your permission.

Can I copy/paste or similar the password is what I'm after.

To type the password with a xbox controller is tediously long.

xbox does not use WPS correct?

Basically it is a limitation to the 360 including the emulator on the One for backwards compatible games that it does not like passwords longer then 16 characters so if you are wanting to play games on your 360 just make change your password to something
that is less then 16 characters.

It would be best to make a new password that's 16 characters or under. You can start here: https://support.xbox.com/en-US/my-account/microsoft-account/change-microsoft-account-password

I wouldn't expect Microsoft to be fixing this bug anytime soon, because I know that this issue has been untouched for probably years.

Instead of choosing a "weaker" and shorter password, do this instead and increase your account security even MORE!

Go to
https://account.live.com/Proofs/Manage and enable Two Step Verification if not already done so.

Below that, set up the Authenticator App.

After you set up the Authenticator App, you should see another paragraph below with the option to create an app password.

Create such an app password and use that password instead of your regular password on the Xbox 360.

That way you can keep your secure 20 letter password, get an "unhackable" account thanks to Two Step Verification where a hacker would have to physically steal your phone to get into your account, and you can use a "weaker" password on the 360 without compromising
your account security, as this app password only allows apps to access certain features to authenticate you, but won't allow regular account access.
