Dying Light 2 only 30 fps on Series S... What a disgrace!

Hi there! The patch doesn't address the FPS issue, and Tech Land have said they can't do anything about boosting performance because the Series S's GPU is holding them back. Some You Tubers like ReviewTechUSA have questioned this response, citing the 60 fps patch for AC Valhalla as one example of developers making the technology deliver. DL2 is quite a good looking game but I don't think it matches Far Cry 6 for visual quality. For a start, DL2 has painted skies instead of the dynamic weather that FC6 has. However, the movement of your in-game character, combined with the combat mechanics in DL2 is definitely more complex in terms of all the variables, like multiple enemies flanking you and your ability to side step and then sometimes take unpredictable swings with your melee weapons because you're under pressure. This must put a lot of stress on the hardware I'd imagine.

I'm actually playing the game and enjoying it, even at 30 fps, and if truth be told, that's how I've played games for years because I prefer owning a console over a pc. The main takeaway is that Dying Light 2 has a stable frame rate on the Series S.

Just found out from Digital Foundry this shock news. The Series S is not even 18 months old and already it's under-powered when it comes to next-gen gaming. Disappointing to say the least. If Dying Light 2 can't manage 60 fps at 1080p, what does that mean for all the other games yet to release this year? If the series S isn't up to the task, then it's time for developers to say so, and maybe the price of new games should reflect this i.e. £49.99 instead of £59.99. The S isn't even achieving 1440p resolution in any of the games I play on my BENQ 1440p monitor. Talk about false marketing. I'm personally hoping that Dying Light 2 is just poorly optimized, especially since Far Cry 6 works brilliantly at delivering 60 fps on the S. As an owner of a Series S, I don't expect PS5/Series X quality, but expectations have been raised that Series S owners would get 60 fps on a consistent basis, albeit without ray tracing which I couldn't give two hoots about anyway. The boffins need to address this quickly, because the Series S looks like more of a liability than an asset at the moment. What a shame!

New patch fixed fps ?

Since I don’t know where to post this I will try in this thread…

Three months ago I bought new Series X from my local store. After two months I’ve noticed that while i’m playing Forza Horizon 5 (doing liveries in garage) my Series X fan was spinning louder than usual. And when I get my hands on Dying Light 2 I started playing in quality mode. But after a while (it’s random - sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes after an hour) my Series X fan starts spinning like crazy for a few seconds (my console even restarted today). I don’t have such problems in resolution or performance mode only in quality mode. My question is - is my series x have problems with overheating? Should I send it back to Microsoft? Or it’s maybe bad optimization of DL2? Also I don’t have such problems while playing Witcher 3 at 4k resolution or even Metro Exodus. My console is in well ventilated place, on top of my desk.

The console is absolutely capable of 1080p/60, 120fps even 8K, as long as the loads of doing so are within its capabilities. You can run PAC-Man at 32k for far less computing power than you use to run a AAA game at 2k.

You’re confusing possible resolutions with a guarantee. It’s like how people think that because they pay for gigabit that they should get those speeds from everyone, which in reality rarely happens because they are unwilling to dedicate such massive bandwidth to a single user. Gigabit is intended for a family of 4 heavy users, not for shotgunning data to a single one. The Series S is designed as an affordable option to play the latest games for general audiences, The enthusiast/performance option is the Series X.

if you’re having trouble seeing, I would suggest investing in a higher quality display with better contrast and electronics, which would be very helpful in a dark game like this.

Hi there! Good point about managing my expectations. If I didn't know how to do that before the release of Dying Light 2, I certainly do now. Going on the Digital Foundry website is definitely a mistake for dudes like me. However, Microsoft have a role in helping consumers manage their expectations and it doesn't help when their Series S video capabilities section states the target resolution as being 1440p with a performance target of up to 120 fps.

I hail from the u.k and the last gen price for a game was £49.99 for a triple A title, in comparison with games on the new systems retailing for £59.99. I don't always make myself clear. Since last gen games ran mainly at 30 fps on console, it made sense in my head to moan about Dying Light 2 (£59.99) carrying the heftier price tag but only delivering last gen performance.

I just didn't expect the Series S's shortcomings to become apparent so soon into its life. I agree wholeheartedly with DOC..DARK1985 (great Youtube video entitled Xbox Series X/S has a dying light 2 problem!) that as consumers, we have a right to complain, but I will now shut up and move on.
