  1. Dolby home theater audio dropping randomly

    Hi Insider team, i am in the Skip Ahead ring and i believe i may have reported this many times before but my Dolby audio cuts in and out sometimes without reason. Here are some things i have noticed.

    I use Dolby home theater setting on my series X and PS5. I first noticed audio cutting in and out when playing Assassin's Creed Valhalla on the Series X and since the audio tearing only happened at certain parts in the game, i thought it was connected to the game but in fact it was not.

    Guru Kronos messaged me last January 2022 trying to help with this and this wasn't an issue for a long time after that except at random rare times.

    So normally when Dolby audio drops completely or audio tearing happens then i switch it to DTS Sound and DTS Sound has never ever ever, did i say ever, it has never ever dropped audio or had any audio tearing except that time with AC Valhalla which is why i had believed that it was the game and not the console. And then i keep it on DTS sound until Dolby starts working again usually after a day or 2 or maybe after some console updates that update while the console is turned off.

    The most recent issue happened in the new years week when i was watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and I was using the built in app Movies and TV app which comes with the Xbox and also uses Dolby audio. I was in the middle of the movie and i missed a scene so i pressed the "rewind 10 seconds" option on the app really fast and usually when i do that and then press play, then it plays normally but not this time. This time, it played but the Dolby audio dropped completely. So i paused the movie for a few seconds and tried to play it again and nothing. So i exited the app and restarted the app and pressed "resume" and still no dolby sound. So i backed out the movie and clicked on another harry potter movie and still no dolby sound. So i rebooted the Series X multiple times and still no dolby sound.

    So i changed the audio setting to DTS Sound and guess what? The app Movies and TV doesn't use DTS audio so i couldn't even watch with that. I had to change it to 5.1 uncompressed and even with that there was audio tearing in the movie and i couldn't finish it. Since i couldn't finish watching the movie, i decided to play a game instead using DTS Sound which has never ever ever dropped audio or had any issues at all. The bad news was that when it rains, it pours. The good ole reliable DTS Sound had audio tearing while playing games which never happened and only started happening after the issue with the movie audio dropping out.

    So i turned the console off hoping the dolby audio comes back on its own randomly. I'm not sure if my console randomly updates on its own or it was the result of just shutting down the console and turning it back on daily that did the trick.

    So yesterday or the day before, my Dolby audio dropped again so i changed it to DTS but get this, my ps5 also uses dolby and that too also dropped randomly and that is the first time that happened since i bought the ps5 two years ago. So even for the ps5, i changed it to DTS sound and then it worked using DTS.

    Now i would assume that the problem is my Sony X85J TV that i had. But if it was an issue with the TV then why was DTS Sound still continuing to work but not Dolby? If it was a problem with the Series X console then why was the PS5 also affected? Now unless both consoles decided to not work with dolby at the same time, the simplest explanation using Occum's Razor is that the problem lies with the dolby app and always did. The only anamoly is the audio tearing started happening with DTS SOUND as well right after the Goblet of Fire incident. I have no explanation for that. Is it also related to dolby app? Find out on the next episode of Dragon Ball Z...sorry i start monologuing when i write too long.

    I also have passthrough enabled but that shouldn't affect anything i dont think. Even after turning off passthrough, dolby audio still wasn't working. It decides to work randomly the next day or the day after that.

    So my question is, do you guys think it could be the dolby app on both consoles or is it the TV itself or something else entirely? Yes i reported this problem on the console. If you search up Dolby on your list of reported problems, then im pretty sure i have a lot of dolby reports. Thank you.

    P.S - if it is the dolby app itself, do i just contact dolby support to release an update on their app?

    Atmos only outputs Multichannel

    So after following up with the Dolby Access support team, apparently games aren't supported on home theater, only on headphones:

    "Unfortunately, Games encoded with Dolby Atmos audio are not compatible with Dolby Atmos for Home Theater, as they are specifically configured for Dolby Atmos for Headphones. If the content you are experiencing is not compatible with the app you are
    using, then audio will cease, or will simply output as regular stereo output.

    To clarify, Dolby Atmos for Home Theater is included at no charge with any Dolby Atmos supported hardware, such as a receiver or Xbox One X, and is used to activate Dolby Atmos features via HDMI connection for a Dolby Atmos certified AVR, soundbar,
    or TV."

    "Unfortunately, the version of Dolby Atmos included with your Xbox is Dolby Atmos for Home Theater, which is not compliant with any gaming content."

    It kind of strikes me as hard to believe, or that this won't be addressed, but that's what they're saying for now. That said, it still isn't working for me for Netflix content either, so I'm going continue troubleshooting with them and see what's doable
    and what's not. Fingers crossed.

    Xbox Series X Audio Delay 150-250ms (Stereo Uncompressed)

    The Xbox audio settings I have available are as follows:

    HDMI audio:

    * Stereo Uncompressed

    * Dolby Digital

    * Dolby Atmos for Home Theater

    Headset Format:

    * Stereo Uncompressed

    * Windows Sonic for Headphones

    * Dolby Atmos for Headphones

    * DTS Headphone:X

    Tried all of them. Nothing helped.

    DOLBY ATMOS and DOLBY VISION BROKEN on XBOX ONE X

    I am able to get Atmos on Netflix with my denon x4400 with the audio settings bitstream out and dolby digital for home theater selected. It makes you download the dolby app to change that setting.

    After installing late November update, No sound

    Sounds like a problem with the HDMI cable. Is it direct to the TV or through a home theater system and then the TV? If it is home theater you may need to run a digital audio / firewire cable for the audio to function into the receiver.

    If you're direct to a TV check you system audio output settings from the Xbox dashboard far right system option. With an HDMI cord you'll ideally want to use Dolby output and let the device it is connect to decide if it will use Dolby or downgrade to a 2
    channel R/L stereo mode.

    Hopefully this helps you out a bit.

    Felix,

    Here's what I saw following your instructions in Display and Sound, Video Output

    1) Display - 1080P or 720P: chose 1080P

    2) Advanced Video fidelity and overscan

    a) Display - Auto detect (Recommended) or DVI or HDMI: chose HDMI

    Display and sound, Audio Output

    1) Speaker audio - chose HDMI audio, bitstream out

    2) Bitstream format - chose Dolby Atmos for home theater (HDMI only)

    Home screen - I noticed no sound while selecting the previous choices.

    Restarted Xbox, still no sound.

    Launched Dolby Access. Split screen shows you are set up for Dolby Atmos for home theater.

    Played video clip. Still no sound. And yes the soundbar is on. No sound on regular TV either.

    Went back to settings. Changed speaker audio to HDMI 5.1. Sound now works again.

    Tried to re-setup Dolby Atmos per Xbox directions. Again no sound. What's wrong now?
