    I reported this issue to LG and Xbox 6 months ago a few weeks after I received my Xbox Series X at launch. Initially things were fine, but a few weeks after launch after an Xbox Alpha Insider update I noticed that when I disabled VRR with 4K 120Hz enabled with my LG C9, the sounds in Settings menus and on the dashboard were garbled and distorted with Dolby Atmos enabled. This also affected some apps like YouTube as well.

    It seems like this issue was fixed by the recent LG C9 firmware from 6/30/2021 (USA 5.10.15).

    The reason I found this issue originally is because with VRR enabled in 4K 120Hz mode, ALLM (Which LG calls Instant Game Response) functions incorrectly. In 4K 60Hz mode and 120Hz mode with VRR disabled it correctly only enables Instant Game Response when I open a game. Then I can have one picture mode (Game Mode with HGIG enabled) for HDR in ALLM mode and another (Expert Dark with Dynamic Tone Mapping disabled) watching a streamng app in HDR, and same for Dolby Vision.

    However, with 4K 120Hz with VRR enabled it incorrectly enables instant Response when I am on the dashboard, in streaming media apps AND games which means I have to use Game Mode picture mode all the time which disables picture settings when using streaming media apps, or I have to use another picture setting which still has settings grayed out and not accessible. I have reported this issue to Microsoft and LG as well 6 months ago, but is still an issue.

    No atmos with 4k on

    Dolby atmos can only be used withe HDMI through ark . There is a issue with Dolby atmos and xbox ,

    Is your tv set to 120hz with 36 bits per pixel.? If it is disable 120hz and set Video fidelity to30 bits or lower ?

    Will I be able to play on my Series X at 1080p 120fps VRR with this monitor?

    that monitor supports 120hz and freesync, you don't need hdmi 2.1 for 1080p and 120hz with freesync at all.

    you need hdmi 2.1 for 4k at 120hz with vrr.

    I have that screen and its fine for most gaming uses.

    that screen has console mode for 120hz, and works fine.

    Users who have Dolby Atmos enabled and console display settings set to 120hz with 36 bits per pixel (12-bit) are experiencing loss of Dolby Atmos audio in some situations.

    • Workaround: Disable 120hz or set Video Fidelity to 30 bits per pixel (10-bit) or lower.
