Does my son need Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass for console to play Fortnite on his Xbox?

Fortnite is a "Free to Play" game and does not require a subscription to play on an Xbox. It is free to download to a console and can be opened and played without Game Pass or Live Gold. The V-bucks are the only thing that you need to purchase.

Just to add some clarity to this...

Any 'Free to play' game (e.g. Rocket Leage, Fortnite etc.) do not require the Xbox Gold subscription to play online. Games that are not free-to-play (i.e. Grounded) will require Xbox Live Gold to play online. Although you can play games with Game Pass, it does not make them free to play online.

Your friend will either need to have Xbox Live Gold or convert his Game Pass subscription to Game Pass Ultimate, which includes both.

If your son is at your place he just has to be logged into that console and your other son can play the games and use the gold. The console does not need to be a home console. When he's at his mother's he will need to have his brother's console as his home
for the other son to use the games and gold. How to do that can be found

Fortnite is free on Xbox.

Unless you are referring to needing to have Xbox Live Gold in order to play it, which Gold does have a cost and is needed to play online multiplayer.
