Thank you for responding, In this case when you are updating the primary alias to the account you are simply removing the old primary alias and adding a new one. In this case when you selected to remove your alias to replace it with his alias you deleted
the old email depending on what the domain was.

"Note If you choose to remove an alias that uses a Microsoft domain such as @hotmail.com, @outlook.com, or @live.com, that alias will be completely deleted and will not be available
to sign in to any Microsoft services.

So once you have associated an Xbox account with a Microsoft account it will always be linked together and there will be no way of actually transferring the Xbox account to another Microsoft account. Another option would be to start a new account for yourself
so that your son may keep the account with the new alias.

Hi, that doesn't solve my problem. I don't need to change the email address I use to login to my Microsoft account, I only have one primary alias for this
[Mod Removed - PII].

My Xbox Live account has the email address [Mod Removed - PII] assigned to it (this was a previous Microsoft account primary alias and cannot be used since it no longer exists) .

I need to remove [Mod Removed - PII] from my Xbox Live account and assign my Microsoft account primary alias [Mod Removed - PII] to it.

If I got it right, then it is not possible. The xbox live and the Microsoft acounts are basically 2 separate Microsoft accounts and you cannot have the same email associated to two different accounts. At the same time you cannot merge two accounts so
if you want to keep the one you call your Microsoft account as it is now, the best thing to do is probably to just add a new and working alias to the other account and then remove the old alias leaving the two account separated but with valid emails.
