    Do Xbox Administrators plan to prune inactive gamertags/accounts anytime soon?



    After speaking with a Microsoft virtual agent, they said a username I wanted was claimed by an inactive account. It would make my day if inactive gamer tags would be freed up to people who would use them. It's not even a big request because they have done it in the past! Upvote if there is a username taken by an inactive account that you want!

    inactive accounts have a long life span, don't hold your breath for it anytime soon.

    Hello there,

    Thank you for posting here on the Xbox forums. It is up to Microsoft as to when unused gamertags become available to the masses. After a certain amount of time where the Gamertag is inactive, the gamertag will then be released.

    Also, 3 years ago Microsoft released a million inactive gamertags to the public. I'm hoping they do that again soon!

    Thank you for posting here on the Xbox forums. It is up to Microsoft as to when unused / inactive gamertags become available to the masses. After a certain amount of time where the Gamertag is inactive, the gamertag will then be released.

    Also, 3 years ago Microsoft released a million inactive gamertags to the public. I'm hoping they do that again soon!

    How to submit a ticket for requesting an inactive account gamertag to be reset?

    I want to change my gamertag to the name I use on all other platforms, the gamertag is used by an inactive (atleast 5 years inactive) Xbox account. How can this gamertag be reset so that I can use it on my own account?
    If they sign into the Microsoft account their xbox gamertag is tied to in order check their email at least once every 2 years then this will also make their account (active) and basically would never have their gamertag reset as long as they do that.

    Because of that there really is no way to know for sure if an account is inactive or not.
