do i need to save some hard drive space?

i have 1tb xbox and currently have 300gb free, but red dead will be out soon and its probably going to be a big download. im asking because I've been told by multiple people, if you don't leave enough free space xbox will start slowing down?

For some games that require more space you will need a hard drive to save your games and since most games have the auto save feature, it will not allow you to play. Just buy a bigger hard drive.

hey there done some more trouble shooting ...

its not the hard drive but the dashboard version i can load a disc up and save a game to the hard drive i just need a way to format or delete the dashboard without physically going through the dashboard to do so !

is there a way to do this?

For the most part on my Xbox One S, I have currently about 50 GB free and my Xbox is still fast in my opinion. As long as you have a decent amount of Internal Storage left, you should be fine. Though my brother has about 10 GB free and his Xbox and it still
appears fast. So ultimately, you don't need to keep that much storage, but I'd recommend about 25 GB for Internal so that it can do it's thing with updates and what not.

 

This does not affect speeds because it is only the RAM that affects the speed of the xbox. The hard drive is what your game storage is being saved on. RAM only stores data while the console is on. RDR2 will not be anywhere near the 300GB mark so you shouldn’t
need to worry.

 

Yes you need to save some freee space for the Xbox works properly, usually is around the 15% of the capacity of the HDD, in your case will be around 144GB, but i think with 90GB will be enough, you can find more info about it here:

There is something called fragmentation in mechanical hard drives that has nothing to do with ram memory, but in the way that information is stored, for this the HDD needs at least 10% free of his total capacity, because the information is not erased, it´s
overwritten, so this free space helps the information to be stored in a more organized way, and this allows a faster reading of that information.

You could also just get an external and not worry as much about space.
