Do Gamertags Expire?

I've been having trouble finding a definitive answer on this but I was just wondering if gamertags ever expire after a certain amount of time. For example, I want a tag that clearly hasn't been used since 2013, its most recent achievement was in a game that
came out in 2012, and has no xbox one games on its list. will this tag expire after 5 years? Or does Microsoft only release them in batches?

*(no rumors or here say please, just a definitive answer)*

To be a bit more specific how do i make my current gamertag an xbox live gamertag?

Note: I have an account on the xbox one but want to carry over my gamertag from the 360 to the one.

Gamertags to be Recycled 5/18/16!

So, does this mean they're waiving the cost of changing your tag, or do we still have to pay (for those who have already used the one free time)? Not so great if we have to hand over money for this.Click to expand...

Uhh... Why should we now be entitled to free gamertag changes?

It's still going to cost $10 to change your gamertag. What does making unused gamertags available have to do with removing the $10 fee?

Ok so if anyone else see's this, the exact wording in the Microsoft Services Agreement (As of 9/29/2018) is this, " You must sign into the Xbox Services at least once in a five-year period to keep the gamertag associated with
your Microsoft account."

As Smwutches has stated, our policy and changes to this policy within our
Microsoft Service Agreement states the following information:

viii. Gamertag Expiration. You must sign into Xbox Services at least once in a five-year period, otherwise you may lose access to the gamertag associated with your account and that gamertag may become available for use
by others.
