Do game stores remove original Xbox clock capacitors?

Ill get this in now as Microsoft will lock this thread as they do not allow discussion of self repair even though that console is well out of production and support, i would rather see you fix it than see it wasted and end up in landfill.

While that's true for the most part, I don't believe this thread needs to be locked. We're talking about a pretty old console here. I too believe that classic machines of all generations should be preserved as best as they can be. If this thread is locked, it won't be by me.

There is a pretty big market out there for repairing old and retro consoles. You may even find one local to you. Best thing to do is a internet search. Recapping is a tried and tested method of keeping these old machines alive. It would probably be a good idea to see how much they charge to check over the whole system.

As I understand it, if the original Xbox has a version 1.6 System board it doesn't need the clock capacitor replaced. If it isn't then you should look into getting this done quickly. The acid in these capacitors can be lethal to the motherboard if and when they leak.

i would take to a local competent repair shop to do that, it is a simple process but depending on the revision console i would do it as they have a tendency of leaking out onto the board and destroying it.

there were later revisions actually sold with a better quality capacitor in its place that did not leak but still i would have it removed, you can also have them replaced with a better quality one too.

capacitor cost is probably up to £2 for a single one max, then you have to factor in the short amount of labour taking the board out and de soldering or snipping the component, should not be much but worth the cost to keep those beastly machines alive.

I won't be worried about it, as i mentioned the period for that to happen was around the 10 year mark this Xbox its 20 years old

I believe that if they can or cannot do this will depend of the place you took it as well as the cost, there are some people that mentions this is a possibility, but is not something 100 percent sure, happened to some users

Also supposedly this happens only on early editions, you must check also if you actually need to do this since if your console has this faulty component, it should already leaked, that happens around the 10th year I believe

The bottom of my Xbox says it was manufactured 7/30/2002. Will it be OK?

I got the Xbox from Amazon. For all I know, the previous owner already removed the clock capacitor.
